San Marcos has presented yet another outstanding year of sports performances showing what it means to be a Royals. This overall Spring Season has led us to six Channel League wins and even more accomplishments as a school.

Starting off hot with baseball as they dominated Channel League with an astounding 12-2 record, taking home the title for the third straight year of Spring sports. Success does not come free and teams from the field to the court understand that as they have continued to put in countless hours of work for their sight year. They are one of the hardest working teams at San Marcos as it shows with their amazing talent. D1 commits Cole Schoenwetter (senior – UCSB) and Owen Estabrook (senior – Columbia) along with D3 commit Caden Hodina (senior – Lewis and Clark) paved the path for our success. The Royals made even more history in the playoffs as they made it to the championship for CIF Division III for the first time in program history. However, it unfortunately came with a loss against Aliso Niguel.

“It was a great experience playing at Long Beach State, no matter the outcome I still love my team and this sport, sometimes the best team doesn’t always win.” said Senior and Team Captain Darren Orlando.

Next up on the list is Softball with another good year. Even with landing fifth overall in Channel League, they had some very close games against tough teams, with the highlight of the year outscoring SB by over 35 runs in their two game series. The Royals were led by Junior and Notre Dame Commit Caitlyn Early, putting up impressive numbers on the year.

The San Marcos Boys Volleyball team had an impressive season, going 30-8 overall and 13-2 in Channel League. They placed second in the league and made a good run in the playoffs including a great win over Servite. However this great season came to an end after being beaten by a tough team in Tesoro. Players such as senior Kyle Foley (Hunter commit) and senior Luke Walker led the team to be able to have this great season.

Another amazing year comes with girls swimming as they won channel league for the eighth straight year. Not only that, they finished fifth overall in division 1, and 20th overall in state. Then, the group of Ava Stryker, Taylor Steelman, Sierra Tallman, and Sophia Panossian broke the school record on their 4×100 that was originally set in 2016. The original record time was 3:28.94, the new record is now 3:27.44.

“We had a good season, undefeated in all league meets and got fifth in D1 swimming,” said sophomore Sierra Tallman “We’ve had good team culture, and our coaching was super invested in our success with not only team but individual growth. Everyones really excited for each other’s success and progress, especially as we broke a team record in the 4×100 team relay.”

Boys Swim had an impressive year as well as they won their channel league swim meet. In this meet senior Japan Depew took first place in the 500 freestyle. Also, the team of Jaran Depew, Jake Magid, Alexi Stapf, and Tanner Williams took first place in the 4×50 freestyle relay. There were also shoutouts given to swimmer Gavin Tallman by coach Peera as he showed amazing effort in pushing through recovering from a fractured elbow that occurred four weeks prior to the meet. He was still able to place in the top 8 in both individual events.

“It was a great final year of high school swimming,” said Senior Jaran Depew. “It was hard for all of us coming back after COVID as a team but effort pays off and I could tell the underclassmen really care about the sport. I hope that they carry the torch into next year’s swim season.”

Boys and girls track and field had much to look up on this season. Starting off early this spring with Ethan Ball tying the Don Green Invite meet record in the frosh-soph hurdles and then making the new county record. The contestants in CIF finals included Avery in the high jump and relay, Ava Carter in the 100 and 200 relay, Makenzie Fauver in the 100 and 300 hurdles and relay along with Kiala Haas in the relay. Rapping up their season as city champs.

“I’m really thankful to my coach for all the opportunities that I was able to compete at, especially things like Mount Sac and CIFs this year.” said sophomore Ethan Ball, “I loved all the energy my teammates brought out there, encouraging each other on, it was just a really great season overall.”

Boys Lacrosse placed third in a tough channel league this year. The royals split their series with both Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara. The Royals did qualify for playoffs and won their first round against Brentwood. However their season came to an end in the second round against Crean Lutheran.

Girls Lacrosse had another good year going 11-7 overall and 7-3 in league. Even though they placed third in a tough channel league, they did manage to sweep their crosstown rival in their series against each other. The Royals qualified for a wildcard spot to make the playoffs, but were beaten by a tough Huntington Beach team.

“We had a great group that worked hard everyday and that is why we were able to succeed!” said junior Ellie Monson

Boys Tennis had an outstanding season winning Channel League and fourth place in CIFs making it all the way to the semi-finals. They also were invited to the Ojai Tournament in late April. A highlight of their season was their first match where they won 12-6.

Boys and girls dive swept the top sports in their diving competitions for Channel League. At the meet at Dos Pueblos, junior diver Kate Edgar had a career best meet as she secured a first place finish. Right behind her was junior diver Bridget Cunninsnon. Boys diver Jack Cunnison – senior – took first place as well. Jack was injured for most of the season, but was able to come in and deliver in a big spot.

Boys Golf had a historic season as they are CIF champions. The Royals are led by senior and UC Davis commit Leo Metzger, along with Junior and Oregon commit Shams Jahangir as they both had amazing seasons

As a school we have not only had an outstanding spring season but an amazing year. These outstanding athletes put in the work and their performances all showed it! San Marcos really dominated this past season across all sports representing our school with pride. Way to go Royals!
