On Wednesday December 5, the San Marcos High School boys varsity soccer team took on Channel Islands from Oxnard, California in Warkentin Stadium for a preseason game. This was their second game at home and third overall. The game resulted in an unfortunate win 4-2 San Marcos loss.
Throughout the course of the game, the team worked hard as a whole, learned from past mistakes, and brought forth a stronger mentality. The starters included Kyle Carter, Brian Godinez, Nick Hail, Ian Hall, Robbie Landeros, Luis Mendez, Joseph Mesa, Baback Nabidavoodi, Kevin Shaw, Luis Torres, and Bryan Quintero. In the first half of the game, Channel Islands pulled through and scored two goals against San Marcos. However, San Marcos Royals persevered and were able to score two goals by Alexis Charco and Joseph Mesa, tying the game. In the second half, Channel Islands shot in two more goals bringing the score to 4-2.
“In the previous game we started losing in the first couple minutes, and the coach said once we concede the goal, we have five minutes to get a goal back. I think this game we did really well in tying 2-2, but we just need to work on maintaining that. We were just not concentrated enough,” said senior Luis Mendez. “ [In the future] Overall we want to keep our shape, and if we were to concede a goal, we have to get right back into the game, we can’t just give up like that, we had five minutes to score, and to relax, and not panic, to stay mentally fit, and not get overexcited and lose focus of what we are doing and trying to accomplish,” said Mendez.
Even though this was a loss, the on-campus coach, Elias Mendez, has high hopes for the coming season.
“I thought it was a good game,” said Coach Mendez. “The kids are improving, we have only been together for a few weeks, and every game we have come out, it is looking better and better. We are still practicing and trying to come together as a group and we are getting ready for the tournament that is coming up and also for league.”
