Over the weekend of April 6, the San Marcos Jazz Band took a trip north to see the famous Monterey Jazz Festival, where dozens of jazz musicians come together to make sweet music.
Senior and lead bassist Sanders Ilenstine enjoyed the festival greatly. “Going to experience a vibrant dynamic culture not readily found in today’s musical landscape was fascinating,” said Ilenstine.
A wide selection of school jazz bands took the stage, including the Santa Barbara City College Jazz Band and the Northridge College Band, as well as jazz musicians like John Diversa.
The event is free for all those who wish to attend. This is the second year the San Marcos Jazz Band attended the festival, and Jazz Band Leader Mr. Kiyoi hopes to make it an annual event.
“Witnessing that kind of talent talent portrayed in the flesh is otherworldly,” said Ilenstine. “The level of accomplishment these musicians have achieved is the quintessence of human experience. Every bit of their existence has led up to this moment.”
Clearly, the San Marcos Jazz Band enjoyed this event, think about joining and you may get to go next year! Look for the SM Jazz Band playing at the Santa Barbara Jazz Festival in May.
