The San Marcos Royals football team had another big win on Friday, September 20, rolling over the Hueneme Vikings with a final score of 49-9. The 4-0 Royals are having a wonderful season and are still looking to get better.
“We are working on trying to be more fundamentally sound in all phases of the game,” said head coach Anthony Linebaugh after the game.
The offense, especially the running game, was very good. Running back Josh Foley scored a scrappy one yard run five minutes into the game for the Royals’ first touchdown. Then only one minute later, defensive back Tony Zuniga scored on a 69-yard punt return. The Royals went on to a 28 point second quarter including touchdowns on a solid pass from quarterback Wesley Ghan-Gibson to wide receiver Coop Pugh, and a touchdown from defensive back Joe Estrada after a missed punt snap by the Vikings.
Hueneme’s only points of the game came from a 60-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, and a field goal in the beginning of the second. At the end of the half the Royals had a huge 42-9 lead.
“I like that score,” said athletic director Abe Jahadhmy at halftime, “We just have to get by without injuries.”
The Royals didn’t have any injuries. After a 26-yard touchdown run from running back Inri Cortez two minutes into the third quarter, their physical, aggressive defense kept the Vikings scoreless in the second half.
“Our defense and offense worked really, really well,” said captain Jose Lara, “I just give it up to the offense because they put up a lot of points.”
With the San Marcos football team adding to their win streak with another convincing victory, their future looks bright.
“We’re really on the quest to be a really good team that could definitely be a contender for playoffs,” said offensive and defensive linemen Jack Haley.
Next week, the Royals have their homecoming game, hosting Channel Islands High School on September 27.
