The Big Read Kick Off

Opinion Editor

Wednesday October 3rd, in downtown Santa Barbara book lovers gathered at the public library to kick off The Big Read. This year is a focus on Tim O’Brien’s popular Vietnam War novel The Things They Carried, and in good form the kick off was furnished with an actual Vietnam helicopter, parked in front of the Anapamu entrance to the library. Plenty of veterans were all rejoicing in not only the push for reading in the community but the education surrounding the devastation that took place in the Vietnam War. Throughout the month of October The Big Read will be holding events throughout Santa Barbara County to encourage a more involved literary community ending with a reading and Q&A with Tim O’Brien himself at 7 o’clock Wednesday October 23 at the Marjorie Luke Theater. Admission is free to all events and there are still plenty of copies of The Things They Carried available at all of the Santa Barbara County Public Libraries. Grab a friend and a book and join in The Big Read.
