Have you made your summer plans yet? The last day of school is inching closer and with the freedom that comes with the end of the school year, the possibilities are endless. If you have not booked your flights or planned in advance, you are not too late! While some people may take trips to distant countries or states, there is no need to travel far nor burden your wallet to have fun.
A perfect way to enjoy the essence of Santa Barbara is none other than a beach day. Pack a picnic and head over to Goleta Beach where for just $10 per hour as a student, you can rent a surfboard or single-person kayak from Paddle Sports Center. While you are near Old Town Goleta, you might go thrifting at the various Alpha Thrift Stores, Destined for Grace, or the United Family Association, all along Hollister Avenue. Not only will you and your wallet benefit, but Alpha donates proceeds to individuals with developmental disabilities and Destined for Grace sponsors young students in Haiti. Once the sun goes down, head over to the West Wind Drive-In, where you can enjoy a movie for just $5 on a Tuesday.
If you feel like escaping from Santa Barbara for a bit, take a road trip down to Los Angeles with friends or with family. It is easy to forget how close we are to the thriving city and all the events and excitement it has to offer. Stroll through Venice Beach, where you’ll find fortune-tellers, circus acts, and street vendors. Experience the Downtown Art Walk, a “free, self-guided, public art phenomenon” according to its website, celebrated every second Thursday of each month. After nightfall, stargaze from the Griffith Observatory and admire its free admission, courtesy of Colonel Griffith who believed, “If all mankind could look through that telescope, it would change the world!”
Do not let summer get away from you. Seize every moment of it and take advantage of the beautiful city we live in. From friendships, to family, to the beach, to the mountains, always remember that the best things in life are free.
