After months of rigorous training beginning in the summer, the San Marcos High School Cross Country team put their practice to the test during their first meet at the Lompoc Invitational on Wednesday, September 9th and came out victorious. The team competed against three other high schools, which included Pioneer Valley, Santa Maria, and Lompoc. The Girl’s Cross Country team swept the race, claiming the top placements of first through fifth place with Erica Schroeder in first, followed by San Marcos runners, Lee Al-Atraqchi, Mya Adornetto, Elsa Robertson, and Kendra Dayton.

“We did really good during this past meet,” said senior Lee Al-Atraqchi. “Varsity girls ran and worked together very well, and I hope we continue to keep that up for the rest of this season.”

From the boy’s team, Logan Briner placed second, Jason Peterson took third, Jeremiah Swider came sixth, and Philip Nauman claimed seventh.

“The team did well together these meets,” said senior Jacob Barrett. “Our performance really reflected the hard work we have put in the season so far.”

A week after their first meet, the team ran against Ventura, Buena, Dos Pueblos, and Santa Barbara at the Channel League meet hosted by Dos Pueblos High School on Wednesday, September 16. During the meet, Logan Briner claimed seventh place in the top ten placements for the boy’s division with a time of 16:04. In the girl’s division, Erica Schroeder placed third with a time of 18:22, Lee Al-Atraqchi in sixth with 19:03, and Mya Adornetto finishing the race in ninth at 19:33.

“I think that we have taken a good step forward these past two meets,” said junior Erica Schroeder. “We have great new members in girls varsity who have really made a difference this year.”

The team is continuing to work hard this season and hope to make qualifications to compete at state.

“We have a very focused group this year,” said Cross Country coach Mr. Stehmeier. “Whenever I tell them to do something, I know that it’s going to be done. They are very driven and are well aware of their goals. Our biggest goal this year is to send the girls to state as a team and to send guys to CIF.”

Cross Country will be having their next meet in Ojai on Saturday, September 19th. Good luck to the team as they continue on this new season!
