A Traditional Ukrainian Dish for Thanksgiving

This traditional Ukrainian dish, known as Golubtsi, is a great addition to any Thanksgiving table. They are stuffed lettuce leaves that can be filled with almost anything, so it suits everyone specific tastes, whether they eat meat or not. Here is the traditional recipe, but it can be easily modified to contain any desired filling:

1 large head of cabbage

1 pound of ground beef or turkey

½-¾ cup of rice

1 onion

1 carrot

2 tablespoons of tomato sauce

2 cloves of garlic

vegetable oil, for the pan

1 teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of pepper

First, start by chopping up the onion and garlic, and shredding the carrot. Mix all of the ingredients, except for the vegetable oil, in a large bowl. Make sure that everything is evenly mixed. Peel off the first few layers of the cabbage, and thoroughly rinse them. Place approximately one tablespoon of filling in the center of the cabbage leaf. Fold the leaf over the filing. Continue filling and folding cabbage leaves, until the mixture is all gone. Fry the stuffed leaves in vegetable oil, until they are golden brown on each side. Enjoy with some sour cream, or tomato sauce. For a healthier option, the stuffed leaves can also be boiled in a large pot for 15-20 minutes.
