Boys Water Polo had another fantastic season backed by a strong senior lineup of incredibly talented young men. With a superb second place finish at 22-7, they head off to CIF to compete against some of the best teams in the state.

On November 3, the Varsity team faced off against Ventura in search of that second place spot. With 9 saves out of senior goalie Ben Spievak and five goals from Miles Cole, they downed Ventura 13-11.

“Tough and physical game today,” said San Marcos coach Jeff Ashton. “Miles did a great job both defensively and offensively and Jesse Morrison did a great job of getting us a goal whenever we needed one.”

Despite a crushing 14-13 loss to DP in late October, the boys had an outstanding season and look forward to CIF. They took down DP on November 1st in convincing fashion, 12-6.

Although the team faced a tough loss to powerhouse Santa Barbara early in the season, the team bounced back.

Coach Ashton talked about the game with a little regret.

They hit a couple of shots we were willing to give up and I think that set us into panic mode,” San Marcos coach Jeff Ashton said. “That’s the same thing we didn’t do. There were definitely shots in the pool they were willing to give us and we didn’t hit those shots and they did. We missed a lot of shots. They did a great job defensively and they made us shoot poorly.”

Later, the Royals were able to take down cross-town rivals and 1st ranked Santa Barbara in a nail-biting 10-9 victory. This was a massive game for the team and the pool was packed with viewers. A thrilling finish left the Royals with huge grins as they pulled out the victory.

After a great season and finishing in second place in Channel League, with wins over all of the channel league teams, they look forward to an exciting CIF playoffs.
