For eight years, the Kids Helping Kids program at San Marcos has been organizing concerts to raise money in order to aid children both locally and globally. These concerts, held at Santa Barbara’s Granada Theater, have been headlined by many familiar musicians such as Andy Grammer, Tim Lopez; musician from the Plain White T’s, and Ingrid Michaelson. This year, a new name will be added to this list and that is Gavin DeGraw. The artist announcement was made by the participants of the non-profit on news program, KEYT, and was posted on social media on Monday November 14..
“Making filming and brainstorming the announcement was really fun and exciting,” said CEO, senior Makena Hubbard. “We are super excited for the concert in January!”
Grammy nominee, Gavin DeGraw has sold numerous hit songs that have reached the top ten list on multiple music rating sites and has released six albums over the course of 13 years. This platinum selling songwriter released his first album in 2003, gaining many listeners as well as participating in tours and being featured this year on Dancing With The Stars. DeGraw’s latest album, Something Worth Saving was released in September of 2016 featuring “You Make My Heart Sing Louder”, “How Lucky Can A Man Get”, and “Say I Am”.
KHK made the announcement with a video featuring DeGraw’s music, clips of his music videos, and the making of the announcement poster. After painting “Gavin DeGraw” on a white sheet, many of the members gathered wearing white t-shirts and handfuls of chalk dust. Standing in a circle, they threw the colored dust in the air, letting it rain down on the poster and on them. After playing with the dust, the group headed to Stearns Wharf with the rolled up sheet. The students let the sheet unravel over the side of the wharf and posted the video and pictures on social media.
“I’m sure this will be the best concert yet,” said senior Linnea Holdman. “We are preparing the stage and the ticket sales are going great.”
