The San Marcos girls Varsity soccer team has outstanding talent. The girls have had amazing seasons the past few years, and are ready to have another one.

There is lots of experience on the team this year,” said Coach Edwin Portillo.

Out of the 20 girls on Varsity, 14 of them are returning players. Six of these players being seniors, and eight of the players being juniors. Within these 14 players on Varsity, 10 of them have been Varsity athletes since their freshman year at San Marcos High School.

I’m excited for the team bonding this season, and to see how we grow as a team,” said Chloe Hamer, a returning senior.

Danielle Anderson, another returning senior, added, “We have a lot of returning players this season. Hopefully we can win league and we can go far in CIF.”

The team has a goal to defend their Channel League title and get to semifinals of CIF, one step farther than what they accomplished in their last season. Last season, the girls varsity team placed in the top 10 of CIF, and were ranked number 9 in Division 3 with a record of 9-2-2, 3-1 in Channel League play.

San Marcos girls soccer played their first game against Lompoc on Friday December 2, 2016. San Marcos beat Lompoc 3-0, with senior Jill Garnet scoring two of the goals and Camryn Crang scoring one.

Each December, San Marcos hosts a large soccer tournament, and this season the tournament is being held December 16-17. Within the tournament, 12 varsity teams will be participating along with eight junior varsity teams. The teams come all the way from Northern to Southern California to compete in the tournament.

The girls varsity team will be playing January 5 against local rival Dos Pueblos High School, and on January 10 they play Ventura High School. Make sure to stop by the San Marcos soccer fields to catch these talented girls on the field this season.
