On April 14 and 15, San Marcos Girl’s Swim competed in an elite tournament at Mount San Antonio College. They competed against more than 30 teams and were able to win for the first time in over 12 years. Girl’s swim team were able to defeat teams that had Junior National qualifiers with San Marcos’s strength and royal spirit. .
“We all have each other’s backs.” said junior, Maija Ninness. “All of us really support and motivate each other by always cheering on each other’s races. Physically, we were able to succeed because of the depth we all had. Almost everyone made it back to the finals which really attributed to our success, while other teams had great swimmers but very few of them.”
Maija Ninnes was athlete of the week from April 17-22 for her amazing achievement of breaking her own San Marcos record in the 100 backstroke with a killer time of 56.96 seconds. Junior, Piper Smith also swam a great race getting 24.15 seconds for the 50 freestyle. These successful swims were huge point scorers for the team and ultimately led to the success of the program.
“I am so proud of our team’s success at the Mount San Antonio College meet of champions.” said San Marcos coach and Head of Aquatics Brian Roth. “I have been attending this meet for over 12 years with San Marcos HS. We have an amazing group of committed athletes who dedicate themselves to our school’s success. Every kid in this program gives everything they can for the team. This is what makes our team unique, special, and successful.”
The Varsity Girl’s Swim team have had an amazing season this year. The team is closing in on Channel League Champions and are heading to the CIF swim meet next month. Make sure to go and support your fellow Royals at the San Marcos pool and watch them dominate.
