For the first time since 1999, the San Marcos boys tennis team won the Channel League Champion title. After a 17 year dry spell the team was finally able to beat out their main competition, Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos. Their other competition included Ventura and Buena. The boys ended their season with an overall match score of 14-4 and a league record of 7-1.
“This was my most memorable season,” said number one singles player, Kento Perera. “Dan and I had a lot of fun as team captains and we won league for the first time in our careers.”
Kento Perera also won Channel League individual singles competition when he took down Miles Baldwin of Dos Pueblos, winning 6-0, 6-2. Sophomores Dominik Stefanov and Daniel Newton were victorious in the Channel League individual competition. They beat out Ventura High School players in the final round of doubles.
“We had an amazing season,” said senior captain Dan Coulson. “Finally winning Channel League was awesome and we even made it to the quarterfinals of CIF, which was very exciting. Our team was very strong and deep. Coach Bradley did a fantastic job and we had a lot of camaraderie; so we had a really enjoyable time on the team.”
Currently, the team is still hard at work, training in their off season. This will all pay off as they hope to defend their title and once again win Channel League.
“I’m really proud and thankful for all my boys on the team this season,” said Coach Bradley. “I hope I can continue to teach and be good friends with all of the players for years to come.”
