Erica Schroeder:

What is your preferred medium?

This year was the first I year started using oil paint, which was definitely a learning process for me. It’s a lot different than acrylic paint; it’s slow drying and you’re able to blend it a lot more. Mixed media is really fun to do too, I do like layering a lot of different mediums.”

What is your favorite piece that you have made?

When I was in the AP class last year, I got to make a series for my portfolio. I chose a theme and made 12 pieces that went along with the it. The theme I chose to do was about a track race, because that’s both my passions together, art and running. I made a series that was in chronological order from the beginning to the end of the race. Explored the mental and physical aspects of running. It was stressful, but really fun to make.”

How are you going to pursue art in the future?

I’m going to the University of Washington next year, and I’m planning on majoring in visual communications, it is kind of like graphic design in a way. I am also going to minor in business, this is because using technology is a lot more relevant today when pursuing an art career.”

When did you start making art and when did you realize you were good at it?

I wouldn’t even say I’m good at it now, but I do enjoy doing it. I started taking art classes my sophomore year here. I definitely have improved, but I wouldn’t say I’m good. This is my third art class at San Marcos and I have definitely improved.”

What is your favorite thing to draw/paint?

My art is more realistic, so I enjoy making observational-like drawings and paintings.”

What are your best skills & what do you want to get better at?

I would say my strongest suit is the creativity aspect, coming up with an idea and making it reality. One thing I’d like to get better at would be developing my own style, I am definitely getting there, but I don’t think I have a specific style just yet.”

Lucas Ricci:

What is your preferred medium?

I really like working with matte cardstock and wood.”

What is your favorite piece that you have made?

Making the Kids Helping Kids Donor Tree Model was fun to do, it look a lot of time, but I think it turned out very nice. It basically consisted of painting and burning names into the wood.”

Who is your favorite artist and inspirations?

There is this girl on Instagram called ‘Calligraphy Katrina’ who makes pretty cool stuff.”

How are you going to pursue art in the future?

In the fall I’m going to go to the University of San Francisco and I will be majoring in Biology on a Pre-Med track. I will most likely pursue art through electives.”

When did you start making art and when did you realize you were good at it?

My handwriting became what it is today around middle school, but I didn’t realize I could do the calligraphy stuff until senior year.”

What is your favorite thing to draw/paint?

I think wood burning calligraphy is really enjoyable.”

What are your best skills & what do you want to get better at?

Skills wise, most likely my normal handwriting gives me an advantage to start, but I would like to be able to complete names, messages, etc. on the first try without screwing up in the future.”
