Halloween Movies

As we near Halloween, it is officially the season for spooky movies! Whether you are a horror movie junkie or not, there is always a scary, spooky, or even evil Halloween movie for everyone.

Children’s classics are often the people’s top choice when it comes to October movies. Hocus Pocus, for example, is just that. This Walt Disney production, originally made in 1993, revolves around a villainous comedic trio of witches who were accidentally resurrected in Salem, Massachusetts on Halloween night. Starring Kathy Najimy, Bette Midler, and Sarah Jessica Parker, Hocus Pocus was not a commercial success when it first came out. According to Abbey Gardner from Glamour, however, through annual airings the film has been rediscovered, resulting in a yearly spike during the Halloween season.

If witches do not fulfill your Halloween needs, try another classic, Beetlejuice. The plot revolves around a recently deceased couple who become ghosts. Haunting their former home, an obnoxious, devious poltergeist named Beetlejuice tries to scare away the new inhabitants. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis starred in the Warner Bros classic children’s Halloween film, which has since expanded its audience to all ages during the fall season.

To really get a good scare out of a thriller, watch the original Halloween, made in 1978. The plot tells about a mental patient, Micheal Myers, who was committed into a sanitarium for murdering his teenage sister on Halloween night when he was only six years old. After escaping the sanitarium, he comes back to his home town to murder again.

Another scary film I am sure you have heard of is The Shining. The Shining is a 1980 psychological horror film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick and co-written with novelist Diane Johnson. Based on Stephen King’s gothic horror novel written in 1977, a family stays in an isolated hotel for the winter where the father is influenced into violence, while his son sees horrific glimpses from the past and future.

“As we’re getting fall weather, I love getting into the Halloween spirit,” said sophomore Kelsey Davis. “I just watched a scary movie with my friends and it was super fun because I haven’t done that in a while. I especially enjoy watching the classics that I watch every year.”

For many, the spooky Halloween season does not begin until they have watched a scary movie, whether that be from your childhood, a fan-fave classic, or a recently released horror film!
