April Freshman Spotlight

Meet Zoe Javanbakht, a 15 year old San Marcos Freshman with a passion for art and swimming. Zoe previously attended La Colina Jr. High, has a brother named Austin who is in 7th grade, and has three cats named Max, Otis, and MJ.

While reflecting on her experience as a freshman on campus, she said that the biggest challenge she faced was figuring out where her classes were on campus. She shared that her favorite part about being at school has been being able to make new friends and meet new people in her classes. She is looking forward to learning more about San Marcos and its campus throughout the school year so that she can become more comfortable navigating it in the future.

This semester her classes are: Freehand Drawing with Ms. Rainville, Health with Ms. Merrill, Math with Mr. McSwain, and Photography with Ms. Mitchell.

“My favorite class is probably freehand drawing because I love drawing a lot,” she said.

The hardest class she has is math because the honors level she is taking has challenged her to dive deeper into the thinking behind the math.

She said that beyond her freshman year she is excited to try out more art classes, “Freehand drawing opens up painting so I think I’d really enjoy getting to do a painting class and just more art electives in general.”

Other than her classes, she hopes to join San Marcos’ swim team at some point in her high school career.

“I used to be on a swim team before San Marcos but because of the pandemic I didn’t try out this year,” she said. “I’m hoping to do it next year though.”

When asked what her favorite part about swimming is, she said that she likes how it works out your whole body rather than just one part and how you never get overheated.

Zoe also has many hobbies she enjoys outside of school. Sewing and binge watching cartoon TV shows such as Infinity Train, are two of them. She says her love of art is what makes her enjoy cartoons so much.

“In the future I’d really love to become an animator because I already love to draw and I really love cartoons and the way that you can create whatever you want without having to be realistic.”

As for books, she currently is re-reading the Maze Runner series.

Lastly, I asked her what her favorite thing about San Marcos is. “My favorite thing is how interactive the staff and ASB members try to make the school,” she said. “I like how they really try to get the students to interact and participate in the stuff that goes on around campus.”
