Emmy’s Recap

The 73rd Primetime Emmy awards were held on Sunday, September 19, 2021. Stars from the screen came together to honor each other’s performances in this year’s most celebrated television series. As far as streaming services, “HBO” and “Netflix” were big competitors throughout the night. Netflix secured the top spot with an astounding 44 wins, and HBO fell into second with 19 wins. Thanks to Apple TV+’s, Ted Lasso, they went home with ten wins as well. “Disney+” also took home 14 wins for their new TV series that were big hits including The Mandalorian and WandaVision.

Mare of Easttown’s Kate Winslet took home “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or a Movie” and Evan Peters with “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or a Movie.” The psychological drama covers multiple topics such as the opioid crisis, trauma, mental-illness, grief and more.

The feel-good comedy Ted Lasso follows an American college football coach who is hired to coach an English soccer team. The main character Ted Lasso, portrayed by SNL alum Jason Sudeikis, is optimistic about his new English team despite his inexperience with the sport. Sudeikis took home “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series” alongside his fellow cast members Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham who took home the supporting role awards.

The big takeaway from the night, The Crown is about the life of Queen Elizabeth II and the time period from her wedding to Philip Duke of Edinburgh until the early 21st century. Elements such as set decoration and accurate representation of events make the show so compelling.

The Queen’s Gambit, set in the 1960’s, follows a young chess prodigy played by Anya-Taylor Joy, who struggles with addiction. It took a big win securing “Best Limited or Anthology Series” and “Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.”

“I think Queen’s Gambit was very deserving of all of its awards. I really enjoyed the cast, storyline and detailed costuming. It told such such an amazing and entertaining story,” said senior Sofia Wallace.

The Emmys continue to serve as a tool to help raise awareness for platforms such as “Netflix” and “HBO” as their successful shows are recognized. They also serve as a marketing mechanism for the winning and nominated TV shows. They are a great way to showcase talent and gather stars for one award-winning evening! Although the star-studded night is behind us, these shows are still available on multiple streaming platforms for your viewing pleasure!
