Cheer Spotlight

Over the last couple of months, the San Marcos cheer team has put in nonstop work into being able to bring spirit into our school. From the countless hours of cheer practice every week to the big halftime performances in front of hundreds of people. Every week the SMHS Cheer team is challenged to come up with a new routine in order to satisfy the audience during football games. Not only does cheer perform at our home games for the audience, they also travel to continue to support the football team and encourage even the smallest of crowds to show their Royal Pride.

“Some of my favorite memories at cheer are the away games, seeing the smiles on parents’ faces as I cheer on their kid, and when they join in on chants or cheers” Varsity Cheer Captain Danielle Britton explains. “At home games, it is much harder to hear and more stressful because the cheer team is worried about our halftime performance. The big away games are the best, the Dons Vs. Royals, I love getting to see the other cheerleaders and support them when they are doing their halftime performance.”

“I have really enjoyed being on the cheer team these past 4 years of high school. I have developed skills and created relationships that I will remember for the rest of my life” says Senior Cheerleader Lily Landeros. “A highlight from my time cheering at San Marcos would be performing at the Christmas parade downtown. It is so fun getting into the holiday spirit and performing for the community.”

“The football games in general were all so fun” said cheerleader Sophie Clough “I really enjoyed cheering the football players and giving the whole crowd school spirit. I really enjoy getting ready with my teammates before games in the dance room.”

The cheerleaders had a very good football season as they were able to perform a new routine every week and continually cheer on the football team at every game. As the cheer team transitions to basketball season, they are working on basketball cheers, which Danielle explains as very different and much more complex than football cheers. The whole team is very excited to move onto basketball season, but they are also going to treasure their football memories forever.
