Countless students wake up at 6:30 in the morning with plenty of time to get ready, but still arrive at school right as the bell rings. Why is this? Because of fashion. Picking an outfit for students can be challenging, especially factoring in the strange weather of Santa Barbara and balancing current fashion trends. Students getting tardies seemed like a solutionless problem. But then, like a blip in the sky, slowly flying closer to save us, the FIDM Fashion Club appeared. 

“We are planning on doing a lot about meeting people who work in  the fashion industry, and we are going to go to fashion shows and learn about it,” said sophomore, Club President Olivia Marceda. “We are going to do a lot of trend forecasting. I think the big thing about this club is meeting people who do what you want to do but have already done it… It is going to be a lot of focusing on what you want to do in the future.”

While fashion is a deliteful focus in itself, Olivia’s FIDM club took it a step further, choosing to focus on sustainability. Due to Global Warming and the undeniable negative effect that fast fashion has on the environment, Olivia wanted to open a space for conversation about the improvements needed for the sake of our planet. Taking on fashion and sustainable fashion is such a big undertaking that a club at San Marcos can cover it all, inter the FIDM college.

“FIDM is actually a college. It’s multiple based in the LA area, one in Orange County, and I think one is in San Francisco,” said Olivia. “My club provides scholarships there and if you are an active member you can get a $5000 scholarship per year.”

In the future, Olivia plans on having guest speakers, possibly a fashion show, collaborating with the photography class, and club bonding days at the beach. The big event will be driving to LA for a fashion show.
