On April 3, The Grammy’s, aka music’s biggest night of the year, took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Hosted by Trevor Noah, the 64th annual Grammy’s were a lively night praising music. As he described it, the night was less of an awards show and more of a concert where they give out a few awards in between.
Silk Sonic opened the show with a euphoric performance and went home at the end of the night with 4 Grammy’s. They tied for best R&B performance and then won record of the year, song of the year and best R&B song all for “Leave the Door Open.” Silk Sonic is an American R&B duo containing Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak. They currently have a show in Las Vegas called “An Evening With Silk Sonic” which has been getting great reviews for its moody ambiance.
Perhaps the biggest winner of the night was the young singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo who started the night with 7 nominations. It was her first Grammy’s and she went home with 3 awards as well as performing her hit song “Driver’s License.” She won best new artist, best pop solo performance for her hit song “Driver’s License” and best pop vocal album for her debut album, Sour. Sour has 11 tracks featuring emotions of teen angst, slow, sorrowful ballads and pop anthems to scream with your friends. Rodrigo has just embarked on her world tour creating a engaging space for fans to scream their hearts out.
The profound American country singer-songwriter, Chris Stapelton also won big, taking home three Grammy’s including best country album, best country solo performance and best country song. Chris Stapelton may be best known for his hit song “Tennessee Whiskey” but most recently released an album titled Starting Over which he won for along with the song “You Should Probably Leave.” Stapelton performed his grammy-award winning song “Cold” that evening as well.
Another other popular award, pop duo/group performance, went to Doja Cat and SZA for their popular upbeat song “Kiss Me More.” Album of the year went to American singer-songwriter Jon Batiste for his album We Are and he won best music video for his song “Freedom,” which he later performed that night.
Other performances of the night were K-Pop group BTS, Brandi Carlille, Justine Bieber, Lil Nas X/Jack Harlow, Billie Eilish/Finneas and John Legend. Legend sang “Free” to support those in Ukraine which even featured a special message from Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Rachel Zegler, Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr. also performed during the memoriam segment, honoring all of those involved in the music industry. The most notable death from the year, (and also most recent) was Taylor Hawkins, the drummer for the legendary band, Foo Fighters. Many were shocked and saddened to hear of his death but are carrying on his musical spirit and legacy.
As award season comes to a close, we look back in celebration at these star-studded nights as our favorite celebrities reconnect and are rewarded for their hard work. However, there is much to look forward to in the music industry such as tours throughout summer and Harry Styles’ new album Harry House, which drops on May 20!
