Darius Miles Trial
Former University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles, charged with capital murder after a shooting in Tuscaloosa, on January 15, 2023. Two people are being charged, one being Darius Miles, former University of Alabama basketball player, and Michael Davis, who is not affiliated with the University of Alabama, or the school’s basketball program. Throughout their trials investigators believed that the gun belonged to Miles, but Davis pulled the trigger. Miles’s attorney argued that Miles supplied the gun to Davis for protection and Davis’s attorney argued that he acted in self defense.Their case is still being examined by the grand jury, and the decision will likely be announced March 8th.
“The court, having heard the evidence in a preliminary hearing, finds sufficient evidence was presented to establish probable cause that the offense charged was committed by the Defendant,” Jannik wrote in Miles’ ruling. “The matter is bound over to the Grand Jury.”
Branden Culpepper of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit testified in the preliminary hearing that Brandon Miller, University of Alabama’s star Freshman basketball player had brought the gun to the scene. University of Alabama said in a statement that he is not considered a suspect, just a “cooperative witness.” The coaching staff for Alabama decided to have Miller play against South Carolina, after the accusations, which started more controversy by him doing a pat down during pregame introductions. He did this referring to these accusations and by portraying how he wasn’t involved.
The next step after the indictment would be an arraignment, which would consist of the judge informing the defendant of the charges from the indictment and making sure he knows his rights. He will then have the option to plead guilty or not guilty.
