The new school year brought many new, exciting activities and initiatives, but one of the best known and loved is the creation of the Girls Flag Football team. With twenty six members on the varsity team, they have shown their commitment to the new sport with their impressive winning track and closely bonded team. It is clear to everyone that this new sport is here to stay in San Marcos.
The team started practicing over the summer, and quickly formed a tight bond. With Head Coach Jason Fowle, they have spent much of their time running drills and conditioning to improve their team chemistry and skills. Led by four team captains, this team trusts each other, and that is clear with their impressive record so far; they have won nine out of the thirteen games they have played this season.
“The sport is exciting, and keeps you on your toes. The coaches also push everyone to their best potential and don’t let anyone feel worse than anyone else,” said Varsity Quarterback Mianna Sturm.
“I love the team because it’s filled with a bunch of people that make me smile, my coaches too. I’m always excited for it,” said Varsity Captain Peyton Sperling.
A common theme in this sport is the immense camaraderie and friendship of the team, something that shines through on the field. Many players spoke about the team bonding “almost instantly” the first time they practiced together on the field, with the many different personalities blending to help everyone feel included. An essential part of any sport, this team’s friendship serves to motivate their game and helps them feel supported and strong during games.
This team is strong in both their passion and their game skills. This season has been very successful, and has paved the way for future years in this new sport. They have proved that they are to be taken seriously, and they are an incredibly hard working group of girls. As they finish up their season, they hope to increase their winning streak, and improve their game skills. Girls flag football is an impressive team that has worked hard for their accomplishments.
