San Marcos’ boys basketball came out with a 72-62 win against the Dos Pueblos Chargers on the night of Wednesday, January 24, after a hot start on offense and solid defense from sophomore Koji Hefner.
Dominant performances from senior Micah Jacobi and junior Danny Diaz, with 22 and 19 points scored respectively, allowed the Royals to keep their lead through both halves of the game. Diaz came out on fire, scoring three three-pointers on three drives as soon as he came off the bench.
When asked what it felt like coming off with such a start he said, “It felt good; I just want to go in there and make myself known.”
“Our success really came from finding our bigs inside, like Micah Jacobi,” Diaz said. “We really ran our plays well, we got a lot of looks inside in the paint and that opened it up for the guards outside.”
Outstanding defense also gave the Royals an edge.
Diaz said, “Koji played awesome, we all played team defense and made it a point to stop them and get the ball back.”
The Royals were able to hold the Charger’s top scorer, senior Matthew Zamora, to just 16 points. On top of the strong defense, Hefner also had eleven rebounds.
The Royals will get on the road and play against Buena at 7:00 on Friday, January 26, and play Santa Barbara at home on Monday, January 29.
