An 18-year standing San Marcos Track and Field record has been broken by four of our school’s fastest . A team of four juniors: Ben Callanan, Cole Heckman, Gage Minne, and Ashton Johnson, ran a school record in the 4×1600 at Mt. Sac on Saturday, April 20.
With a time of 18:27 minutes, they placed 6th in their heat and 7th overall. The boys broke the previous school record of 18:32, set in 2006.
Callanan ran the team’s fastest split, with a personal record of 4:34. Minne and Johnson both set personal records as well, with times of 4:36 and 4:38, respectively. Heckman ran a split of 4:38, which is three seconds off his personal record of 4:35.
“We all had a lot of fun, and enjoyed the whole experience,” said Minne. “The race itself was amazing; three of us got personal bests. I got to go to the Athletic Round Table on Monday, which I felt was well deserved as I got a personal record and a school record.”
The boys take on league finals Thursday, April 25. Johnson’s 800 meter time of 1:58 will give him a chance to move on to CIF after league finals. The boys, all of whom are on the varsity cross country team, will be back in ink soon, as they are on track to break more records in their senior year.
