In November of this year, the San Marcos High School theater department will be putting on the play Pride and Prejudice in the Marquis Performing Arts Center.
Based on the novel by Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice is the famous story of the complicated romance between Elizabeth Bennet and the aristocratic Mr. Darcy, who must learn to overcome their differences and, eventually, fall in love.
These beloved characters will be portrayed by Senior Camille Tracy as Elizabeth, and Junior Josiah Mitchell as Fitzwilliam Darcy. Both Tracy and Mitchell are incredibly talented actors who have played central characters in San Marcos productions since their freshman years, including Tracy starring as Alice in the SMHS production of Alice in Wonderland.
Everyday during fourth period, cast and crew members come together to rehearse for Pride and Prejudice, analyze the script, and perfect their crafts. Sophomore Naomi Voight, who, as a freshman, starred as Kathy Seldon in Singin’ in the Rain and is now playing Jane Bennet, Elizabeth’s older sister.
“The play is going so well right now. It’s such a bonding experience with the cast to analyze and understand the text together. I think we’ve got such a special show coming together,” Voight says.
Behind the production quality and beautiful sets that can be seen in the theater are the SMHS Stagecraft and Play Production classes, who build the sets and are critical to many technical aspects of the show.
Senior Julia Kirchmaier, who has been in Stagecraft all four years of high school, said, “It’s going really well, we are making good progress and the set is going to look really cool.”
The fall play is coming along wonderfully, and the students who participate in productions such as this one work extremely hard. Make sure to attend on any of the following dates and support the arts!: November 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 14th, 15th, and 16th.
