On Monday, September 23rd during lunch, the Greek theater was graced with the talents of many Folklorico dancers in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage month is a month to honor the diverse backgrounds of Hispanic and Latino Americans, Folklorico is a regional dance that is deeply rooted in the culture of Mexico. It is a fusion of indigenous dances that pass down the stories and traditions of their native lands. There were a total of five dancers, with each dress the dancers wore representing a different region in Mexico.
“It mattered to me because I wanted to see more Hispanic representation and celebration on campus, and it’s an entertaining way to educate others about hispanic culture,” said Senior Yara Martinez, San Marcos’s cultural relations coordinator of ASB who worked diligently to make this event possible.
Folklorico dance incorporates music and outfits that represent different regions of Mexico. Each region has its own unique set of footsteps that tells its history, entangling the elegance of dance to create dances like the Jarabe Tapatío, the traditional folk dance associated with jalisco and the graceful movements of Danzón with music that originated from Cuba. Anything from the beaches of Jalisco to the mountain terrains of Veracruz celebrate their beliefs and community while maintaining the characteristics of their culture.
“We are working hard to make sure everyone feels included and seen as well as celebrated” said Martinez on behalf of ASB. She had said that it was difficult to arrange due to the calls and booking dates she had to make, but it was worth it to spread more awareness of the culture in all its beauty.
“It was cool because of their skill to remember the moves for it”, said Sophomore Jason Guzman regarding the dancers in the Greek.
So before the month ends, maybe consider taking the time to learn a fun fact about another culture, not necessarily Mexican culture but something to acknowledge and celebrate in the midst of Hispanic Heritage Month.
