This school year at San Marcos, we have a total of 55 clubs with a wide range of interests, from the Students for Shelter Animals Club to the Dream Foundation Club. This year, the Sustainable Future club was revamped and became much more personal to San Marcos. Co-lead by presidents, Caroline Wang and Ava Jane Damery, the club’s mission is to beautify San Marcos Campus, learn about the environment, and have fun all at the same time.
On November 10th, the club held its first “work day”. It took place from 10 am-2 pm and was not just limited to San Marcos students. The SFC work day was the first beautification event held at San Marcos; it focused on reviving the creek near the C-lot.
Why focus on the creek? The area near the creek is the only riparian zone on the San Marcos campus. If you are wondering what a riparian zone is, it is the zone between water and land, like the bank of a creek. Unfortunately, over recent years, the bank by the creek at SM has been looking barren and dry, so the club decided to help bring it back to life with various beautification efforts. These efforts will not only make the bank of the creek more green and luscious, but it will also improve water filtration of the creek, and soil quality and it will help prevent erosion. The work day was a success with over 20 people coming together to plant trees on the bank of the creek.
“The day overall was so inspiring! It was incredible to see how many students showed up motivated to make an impact. Everyone worked so hard to restore the creek bed and every single person was dedicated to being the change they wish to see on our campus. It was a fun day full of work, passion, laughs, dirt, music, beautification, food, and teamwork. The Sustainable Future Club is committed to climate justice and we strive to make a difference one step at a time. We hope more Royals join us at our next planting day, as giving back is a lasting source of fulfillment,” said the club co- president sophomore Ava Jane Damery.
With this exciting start, The Sustainable Future Club is sure to make San Marcos a much greener place-a change that will be felt for decades to come. Whether you are an experienced gardener or are just simply curious, make sure to come out and have fun while making our school campus a more vibrant place. To keep up to date with the club’s future plans, follow their Instagram account or show up to their club meetings on Tuesdays in S-2.
