What is the spirit of entrepreneurship? Is it a drive to create change? To imagine something new? To help others? Whatever the spirit of entrepreneurship is, a local economic empowerment group, Women’s Economic Ventures (WEV) certainly thinks our San Marcos Entrepreneurship Academy embodies it.
The Entrepreneurship Academy also known as SMEA is bursting with students who are interested in business, marketing, and solving problems. SMEA does a great job at exposing students to business leaders and involving our students in real world applications of their knowledge.
“Each year students in our ENT 201/202 course compete for a $1000 grant through pitching their ideas in the SBCC New Venture Challenge,” said SMEA director Mr. Oleson.
During lunch on November 21st, WEV presented SMEA with a special honor: the Spirit of §Entrepreneurship Award. This award came alongside a large donation of $5,000, in the form of a massive check.
“WEV has provided support and mentoring under the leadership of Mr. Oleson, and we felt like the funds would go to great use, supporting student entrepreneurs and fueling their passion for entrepreneurship,” said CEO of WEV, Nicki Parr.
When thinking about entrepreneurs, we often think of the massive tech giants, but not always our smaller, more local entrepreneurs. Really, anyone who starts a business is an entrepreneur. The Entrepreneurship Academy does a fantastic job of providing resources to our students to empower their entrepreneurial futures.
“Entrepreneurs are empathetic problem solvers. So, my advice to students is to build a mindset and reputation as someone who is empathetic and is really curious about solving problems,” continued Mr. Oleson.
So if you are interested in business and entrepreneurship, the Entrepreneurship Academy is a great place to start. Or, join their club, Entrepreneurship Society. In the meantime, use your resources, network, and have confidence in taking educated risks, emphasis on educated!
