Did you know that our school has a senior musical every year? Many students do not know about this yearly tradition of showcasing the talents of the graduating class. These seniors work tirelessly for months, memorizing their lines, getting into their characters, building sets and rehearsing scenes, in order to share an incredible show with family, friends, and the San Marcos community. This year they will be taking us on a trip down the yellow brick road. The Wizard of Oz is the classic tale of Dorothy and her dog, Toto, who crash into the land of Oz and their journey to the Emerald City. They make many friends and foes along the way, and now the magical story will come to life on stage at our own school.
“I’m thrilled to portray Dorothy Gale in the Wizard of Oz. It’s an incredible opportunity to showcase the talent of our class of 2025 to our audiences. Not only am I excited to perform, but I’ve also discovered hidden aspects of the character that resonate with me, allowing me to connect with the role on a deeper level,” said senior playing Dorothy, Maddie Weber.
A majority of the cast of the musical has been involved in the theater department at SM since freshman year, and this show is a special experience as one of their last performances at SM. The Wizard of Oz is a story that is well known by so many people all around the world, most of us watched the movie at some point when we were kids. It is a perfect send off show for the senior class, because the story is so nostalgic. Additionally, the story is filled with important themes that we could relate to and understand.
“Most of us have grown up watching the Wizard of Oz, so performing and playing Dorothy, as well as rewatching the movie numerous times throughout this experience, has made me feel like I’m reliving a part of my childhood that I’ve almost forgotten,” added Weber. “This show explores themes of friendship and self-discovery while confronting the challenges of life. I believe you’ll find a character who resonates with you, whether it’s Dorothy, who teaches us to appreciate the little things, the Lion, who seeks his courage, the Tin Man, who rediscovers love and compassion, or the Scarecrow, who gains wisdom and a brain.”
The Wizard of Oz opens this Thursday, January 23rd at 7pm, followed by shows on Friday, the 24th and Saturday, the 25th at 7pm with an additional matinee on Saturday, at 2pm. Get your tickets on GoFan now. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see these incredibly talented seniors perform the timeless tale of the land of Oz!
