The Giants are good again. There is no getting around it. In the beginning of an exciting MLB season, the Giants are off to a great start at 19-10 in a very competitive division. Initially leading the NL west with wins against the Reds, the Astros, the Mariners, and the Yankees, Giants fans are enjoying more hope for a World Series win than they have had in years. Some call it delusion, but this could be one of the Giant’s most promising teams in years.
The Giants were not anything special last year, finishing the season 80–82. So how did this apparent turnaround happen? This offseason, they signed Shortstop Willy Adames to a 7 year $182,000,000 contract from free agency, filling the void World Series star Brandon Crawford left in his retirement. They also signed Veteran pitcher Justin Verlander to fill out our promising pitching depth chart. Others think the Giants recent success can be attributed to giants legends Buster Posey and Barry Bond’s involvement in the team. Posey is the new president of Baseball operations, and Bonds has been helping struggling hitters fix their problems.
According to MSN, after Bonds helped second baseman Tyler Fitzgerald, “Fitzgerald has looked like a completely different hitter. He went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in the Giants’ 11-4 win over the Phillies on Wednesday, continuing a torrid stretch that’s seen him go 11-for-23 over the last six games. He’s raised his average from .179 to .314 and his OPS from .431 to .842 in the span of a week.”
Posey had also been attributed to helping the team environment and play style.
While the Giants are off to a great start, so are their competitors in the NL West. The Dodgers and the Padres are both standing strong at 18-10 and 17-11 respectively. The Diamondbacks at 15-13 are also proving to be tough competition. Although undoubtedly in the most competitive division in baseball, many fans are still excited.
“I haven’t felt like this about baseball in years,” said Giants fan and senior Ashton Johnson.
So will the Giants fulfill the hopes of many and make a World Series run? Or will their division get the best of them? Only time will tell.
