Every year, the San Marcos Madrigals and Enchante put on their annual Pop Show. Pop Show is the San Marcos choir department’s biggest fundraiser of the year and always has an exciting theme with incredible performances. These performances include class pieces, small groups, duets, and solos that students have worked incredibly hard on.
Students audition their individual pieces in front of the talented choir director Eleni Pantages for a chance to be featured in the show. The San Marcos choir department also holds a silent auction at the show which also helps them raise money for future endeavors. This year, the San Marcos choir department is pleased to announce their last show of the year, “I Love The 80s.” In preparation for this show, all of the Enchante students researched different aspects of the 80s, such as big events, politics, pop culture, technology, and, of course, music. This research helped these students expand their knowledge of the 80s so it could shine through during their performances. On top of this, they also looked for an array of different popular music genres to audition with, including 80’s Pop, Musical, Rock, Blues, and many more.
“As a uniform manager for the choir, I’m very excited for this theme! We’re performing songs from the 80’s and we also are going to perform in 80’s-themed ensembles. I’ve really enjoyed getting to learn about the 80’s fashion and music!” said junior Haylie Preston-Mendoza.
While Enchante students worked on their research, Madrigals students were hard at work putting together their 80’s pieces and getting ready to wrap up the year. Madrigals is San Marcos’s year-round choir, making it a tight-knit community. This helped them significantly when they put their 80’s pieces together. Madrigals will continue to work tirelessly until the end of the year to perfect their music. “Our choir is putting on a pop show that’s full of energy, music, and fun. It’s going to be an exciting performance that everyone will enjoy!” Said Junior Amber Coltrin.
Some pieces you will hear during this Pop Show are 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton performed by Enchante, Footloose from Footloose the Musical performed by Madrigals, Uptown Girl by Billy Joel performed by Royal Knights, and many more that you’re sure to love. You will also get the opportunity to watch small groups, duets, and solos. Some of these performances include Crazy Train by Ozzy Osborne performed by senior Aaron White, Material Girl by Madonna performed by freshman KJ Alejandre Padilla, Keilani Pozos Martínez, Sophie Menelli, and Chloe Voigt, Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper performed by Chloe Nydam, and so much more!
Before these incredible performances start the choir department holds a silent auction 30 minutes before the show starts. Some things you’re able to acquire at this silent auction include gift baskets, gift cards to local businesses, household items, and many things that people of all ages can enjoy. This auction is a big reason that this fundraiser show is so important to the choir department.
Be sure to be in attendance to support this choir program, which is filled with talented students. This fundraiser will help the choir program and its students, who truly deserve the chance to pursue their interests in choir. Clear your calendars for June 5th, silent auction starts at 6:30 and the show begins at 7, and remember to buy your tickets on Gofan (only $5 per student ticket)! Sophomore Macy Lynn said it best, “Pop Show is going to be awesome, everyone should go!”
