As August comes to an end, music is on the rise, and because of this we have gained a beautiful new album from Laufey, A Matter of Time, which has already struck the hearts of many within the first few days of its release. The album mainly consists of whimsical, orchestra oriented melodies as well as pop, which immediately captures the attention of all listeners.
A Matter of Time was released on August 22nd with a total of 14 songs. Within its first week of its release the album has already done numbers on the charts. A Matter of Time has become Laufey’s third studio album in her career. Her first official album being Everything I Know About Love which was then followed by Bewitched. Each of these albums have managed to ultimately captivate and move all listeners through every song that is played by her alluring storytelling, heart wrenching and relatable lyrics, as well as her own unique sound that all of her listeners are immediately drawn to.
San Marcos Junior Camila Lucero stated, “it gave me an old fairy tale tone with lots of references to castles, princes, knights, jesters, and rulers. I really enjoyed Snow White because it talks a lot about how there are specific views where the body is put over the brain and it just kinda shows the part of the heartbreak that shows how she dreamed of a future that couldn’t end up happening because of it”.
Throughout the album, Laufey’s storytelling allows the listener to imagine a series of heartbreaks through fairytale scenarios, which allows the vulnerability of her lyrics to become more relatable due to the different interpretations that can be felt.
The overall themes throughout this album are heartbreak, the harmful effects of beauty standards, as well as identity. These themes are best represented in the song, “Too Little, Too Late”, which illustrates heart break with the lyrics including “To tell you I should have chased you”, and “I should be the one you’re engaged to”. “Forget-Me-Not” dives into the topic of identity which discusses the topic of identity, which is represented by its lyrics sung in Laufey’s native language of Icelandic, lyrics include, “Gleymdu mér aldrei þó ég héðan flýg / Gleymdu mér aldrei, elskan mín”, which translates to “Never forget me even if I run away / Never forget me, my love”. Finally, “Snow White” demonstrates the toxic topic of beauty standards which is represented by the lyrics, “I don’t think I’m pretty, it’s not up for debate”.
In A Matter of Time, Laufey transports us into a storytelling reality that allows us to somehow relate to this fantasy that she has crafted throughout the album. This is an album full of whimsy, vulnerability, heartbreak, self acceptance, and storytelling that is told through beautifully constructed lyrics, melodies, and overall visual imagery. The A Matter of Time tour is starting September 15th and will last until October 27th and will definitely be an experience of a lifetime. Buy tickets now on Ticketmaster!
