Over this past summer we saw trends from the early 2000’s and 90’s reinvented along with the revolution of pink hair, elaborate hairstyles, and makeup inspired by the hit show, Euphoria. People are getting more and more creative with their outfits by finding their own individual pieces through thrifting and buying from small brands and shops on instagram or Depop. This has further allowed people to freely express themselves through fashion without paying attention to retail brands or gender norms. As quarantine rolled around, everyone thought that fashion would be put on hold without Fashion Week and other fashion related events, but through social media platforms like Tik Tok, Pinterest, and Instagram, the constant evolution of fashion and its generating trends still survived. This is how I think these trends will evolve into our 2020 fall season, this is my list of 2020 fall fashion predictions:
Tops:
Sweater vests and plaid cardigans are back in for another season as layering becomes more popular with fall’s chillier weather. Turtlenecks and dress shirts layered with vests and crew necks along with pleated or tennis skirts have become a staple this past spring and will definitely be making its way into this fall. However, if you want a more funky and vibrant look while also staying on trend, I have been spotting many long sleeve patterned tops with that inside-out look complete with a lettuce hem or mesh material. There has also been an increasing popularity with tops that have a “torn-apart and restitched” denim look as well. Bedazzled shirts is another trend from the early 2000’s that has made a comeback this summer and is here to stay this fall with designs like hearts and butterflies and slogans like “I <3 Cowboys” and “Angel.”
Pants:
This past summer we saw early 2000’s inspired low-waisted jeans make a comeback in streetwear. I believe that in the fall, those low-waisted jeans will continue but evolve into low waisted trousers and khakis in beige and various other colors. I have also been noticing the growing popularity of reworked denim, specifically the mismatched colored ones with that inside-out frayed look. Corduroy pants will also be perfect for fall especially with bolder colors like orange, green, or pink.
Outerwear:
For fall outerwear, nothing beats girly cardigans and chunky grandma sweaters, which styled the right way can become a major gender neutral trend as well. So far this year, we have seen many leather blazers which I believe will continue into the fall season but will also evolve into more oversized leather jackets.
Dresses:
Knit dresses have started making appearances late into the summer with supermodel, Kendall Jenner, starting the trend by wearing a green shin-length knit dress with some funky patterns and other vibrant colors. Ever since Jenner’s appearance in this dress, many throughout social media have also been wearing the same dress and I wouldn’t be surprised if some popular brands start to catch on soon, and make their own versions.
Shoes and Accessories:
Shoulder bags ruled the Summer of 2020 with various materials, patterns, and colors, but lately I have been seeing more bags made out of furry or fluffy materials and longer straps that feature designs like animal prints and bold, vibrant colors like purple or light blue. A gender neutral shoe that I think will make a comeback in 2020 are Nike Blazers Mid ‘77 that were extremely popular in the 1970’s.
Colors and Styles: Some colors that I would watch out for this fall are lime green, pink, orange, light blue, and all shades of brown. With these colors, I expect to see a lot of mixing and matching patterns, monochrome sets, and more funky yet modern outfits with influences from the 70’s and early 2000’s.
2020 so far has had its downsides, but I believe this period of fashion has definitely been an upside. Although the pandemic made it very hard for big-name designers and stylists to display their work on the runway or on A-list celebrities, their absence from determining trends has allowed teenagers and young adults to become more creative through social media with their newfound fashion freedom, all building their individual styles around their personalities and lifestyles. This to me is what makes fashion so exciting and I can’t wait to see how the big-name fashion industry will adapt to and influence this new age of fashion trends and social media influencers.
