The 2021-22 NBA season has been filled with excitement and surprises. With the season arriving at the halfway mark all eyes are set on the all star break! This will be the 71st annual All-Star break for the NBA and will be hosted in Cleveland, Ohio this year. You can find the game being televised nationally by TNT. The All-Star game starters were recently announced, Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks and DeMar DeRozan of the Chicago bulls were named the backcourt starters in the East. This will be Trae Young’s second appearance and DeRozan’s fifth appearance. Keven Durant from the Brooklyn Nets and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks were granted the front court starters in the East, earning their twelfth and sixth All-Star game appearances. Joel Embid from the Philadelphia Seventy Sixers will also join the East front court making his fifth appearance.
In the West, Ja Morant star of the Memphis Grizzlies and Stephen Curry from the Golden State Warriors were awarded their first and eighth All-Star appearance in the front court. Andrew Wiggins of the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles star Lebron James were both named to their first and eighteenth All-Star appearances.
There has been a lot of controversy on Warrior’s Andrew Wiggins being named a starter on this year’s All-Star team roster. Wiggins has been averaging about 18 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal. These stats are good but lots of people are stunned by the choice of him being named a starter of the All-Star team. On the other hand there are lots of NBA fans that think Wiggins plays a big role in the Warriors 37 win season so far which is second in the Western Conference with only 13 losses. “I thought I was dreaming,” Wiggins said after being awoken by his family with the exciting news. “I am just thankful…It means a lot. This organization, the culture here, everyone here they have accomplished so much. To hear that, it means a lot.”
Five time NBA All-Star and fellow Warriors teammate Klay Thompson replied to the controversy adding, “We would not be where we’re at without his play. I am very happy for Andrew and it’s just really cool. He deserves it. I wholeheartedly believe that.” Senior San Marcos basketball player TJ Robinson commented on his thoughts on the upcoming All-Star break. TJ said that he has always loved watching the All-Star game and his favorite contest over the weekend is the dunk contest. I also asked Robinson what his prediction for the winning team was and he said “I’m gonna go with team Kevin Durant by 20.” Make sure you tune in for the 2022 NBA all star weekend starting on Friday, February 18 and will go through Sunday the 20th on TNT.
