Aaron Rodgers season has ended before it even started. In the very first game of the season, Rodgers tore his Achilles and will be out for the rest of the season. This is terrible news for fans of Rodgers, and fans of the Jets, who had so much hype going into this season. lots of people predicted that they were going to be locked for the playoffs this season, and even potential Super Bowl contenders, losing Rodgers is going to hurt their odds significantly.
As it happened, the game had just begun with a quick defensive stand from the Jets defense causing the Bills to punt. This is when Rodgers took the field for the first time as a Jet with the home crowd buzzing with excitement. His first pass attempt was an incomplete deep ball, then on the next play he would be sacked by Leonard Floyd who would fall awkwardly on his knee. Rodgers seemed okay at first but then crumbled to the ground in pain. The training staff would hustle out on the field to Rodgers who was eventually carted off the field. Initially, the significance of the injury was unknown, but later on during the game, it was rumored that Rodgers had torn his Achilles. This would be confirmed the next morning that Rodgers had in fact torn his Achilles, shattering news for the Jets.
As for the rest of the game 2021 2nd overall pick Zach Wilson would come in serving the backup role this season, and fill in for the rest of the game. He had a solid game throwing for 140 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. But the game’s biggest play would come in overtime after Bills kicker Tyler Bass knocked in a 50-yard field goal to send the game to overtime. The Bills would get the ball first in overtime but quickly go three and out. This is where punter Sam Martin kicked a punt to Jets rookie returner Xavier Gipson who fielded the ball at the Jets 35-yard line and returned it all the way for an incredible game-winning touchdown, giving the Jets a 22-16 win over the Bills.
“I was watching the game in my house and was super excited for the first game of the season.” said sophomore, Jets fan, James Oats, “The whole new team we built when I saw Rodgers go down I was so sad I couldn’t believe it, but I didn’t think it was going to be to serious but, when I heard the news he tore his Achilles I was so mad. I don’t really think Zach Wilson is good, and I don’t think we have a chance anymore at winning the Super Bowl without Rodgers.”
As for Rodgers, a torn Achilles will likely take around a year to recover fully, and a long road ahead for him to regain full strength and get back out on the field again for the Jets.
