It is 8 a.m on a Tuesday morning and 36 students roll into I-9 to start making plans for this school year. ASB is planning many fun activities for all students to experience. The goal is for students to feel included and make San Marcos their second home.
October 21 is the date set for the homecoming dance, which will take place at San Marcos. The theme, “Diamonds and Disco; We Make the Whole Place Shimmer,” was selected by the junior class. Students are encouraged to record their homecoming proposals to be entered into a giveaway. The winners of the giveaway will receive homecoming tickets for free.
Four spirit weeks will be taking place the week before the big dances and there will be less repetition of themes. Best-dressed competitions during lunch will be held and the contestants will have the opportunity to win a front of the line pass for the homecoming dance. The themes of the spirit days will be announced soon.
“Senior events are currently being planned, though not much has been set in stone,” said Activities Director Paul Hiracheta. “We want to be able to hear from the senior class to give the events and school culture that they want.”
There will be four dances total: a homecoming, winter formal, spring fling, and prom. Other details to come.
Three post-game parties (PGP’s) are planned to take place after home football games. Most recently, the first PGP followed the Rio Mesa home game. Shakademik made an appearance and custom Royal cups were passed out. Students are encouraged to reach out with any further ideas for PGP parties being held after other sports.
There are many lunch pep rallies that are being planned to take place before big sporting events. Varsity Cheer will perform at lunch as well as Marching Band and Color Guard to hype up the school spirit. Several games are also played like dodgeball and water balloon toss competitions. Four major rallies will be held in a new location, which is currently being planned out. Class competitions will also be taking place to create a sense of community and competition.
“We are planning more events during lunch that promote unity and inclusion, such as cultural events,” said ASB vice president Mitzi Ojendis Hernandez.
No matter what grade students are in, San Marcos student and teacher leaders encourage students to reach out with any further ideas. There are many events that are on the 2023-2024 agenda that students will be waiting for.
