As high school students, naturally, everyone is excited for summer break to have no classes, no homework, and virtually nothing to do. Students still need to do something during the summer, right? An easy solution to the lack of things to do during the summer is to get a job or maybe an internship.
Getting a job would allow students to not only have great job experience that will help them out later in their career, but it will also provide them with a steady flow of income throughout the summer. The money that is earned through a summer job can be spent towards fun summer plans, or it can be saved up for a bigger purchase.
During the summer, since there is no school, highschool students have a lot more free time which means that they can work a lot more. The extra hours that are available in the summer makes having a job even better. 3a
“Summer jobs are excellent for developing all sorts of real life skills that you can’t necessarily pick up in school. You have to work with all sorts of personalities and different ages and if you are in a customer facing role you have to deal with the public, so you never know what’s coming at you from day to day, you have to manage your time, be responsible to a supervisor. Those are all hugely valuable experiences,” said college and career center counselor Lindsay Woodard.
Some examples of jobs that you can apply to as a highschool student in Santa Barbara are:
Mcconnells: Mconells is a great first job to have as it can provide students with many basic workplace skills, this is a great job to have over the summer. Mcconnells hires people as young as 14 which is great for freshmen struggling to find jobs.
Another great summer job opportunity is being a lifeguard for the county. If you have gone through lifeguard training this is a great opportunity for you. With this job students could spend their summer days on the beach while getting paid.
Goleta union school district is also higher in students to be group leaders for kindergarten students over the summer. This job could also turn into a more permanent position in the fall if desired by the student.
Instead of a job, some people may have an internship. Although having an internship doesn’t pay, it can give students even better experience in the real world. Internships are often focused on specific interests students have. Having an internship gives students incredible resources to learn new real life working skills as well as make meaningful connections that can help them in a future career.
It is harder to recommend internships as it depends on students’ individual interests but it is recommended to choose an internship in a field you are interested in.
“Internships are fantastic because they can help you resign your interests around a potential major or career, and sometimes you find out that you don’t like things you thought you were interested in, so that can be huge going forward,” said Ms. Woodard.
Jobs and internships are an excellent way to spend extra summer hours while also greatly benefiting from the money, experience and knowledge they provide you with.
