The Royals of San Marcos are a wide community of people from many different backgrounds and cultures. On Wednesday, November 20th, the San Marcos quad will be set up like a club rush for its first World Culture Day. During lunch students will be able to see tables each representing a country accompanied by students who will be dressed in cultural attire who will also be giving out sample sized portion of a dish from their country.Though ASB has worked hard to make this day possible at San Marcos, the students of the campus are really what give it life. With a new reason for diverse celebration comes anticipation and curiosity for what this World Cultures Day will bring.
“I appreciate that San Marcos is hosting this because it’s important for people to engage with other cultures and having a world culture day is a fun way to explore and connect with the backgrounds of other students,” said San Marcos senior Laura Guerrero.
For many, World Culture Day is an opportunity to share family traditions and personal histories.
“I think it’s really cool that we are having this to learn about other cultures. I want my culture to be represented as more than just bright colors and mariachi music,” said San Marcos sophomore August Rivera Pedrote.
“My hope for the event would be for it to be fun and I think we should keep doing culture days like this because it makes me feel more represented at school,”August added..
As the event approaches, much excitement is arising from what will come from San Marcos’s first World Culture Day.
”We have 40 students and 3 teachers participating in this event and are so excited for everyone’s culture to be represented on campus and we are happy that the student body will be able to learn more about each other’s heritage through food” Said ASB’s cultural relations coordinator Yara Martinez as she explained how challenging planning out the event had been due to having no prior framework or blueprint for it.
Whether setting up a table or coming to learn about a variety of nationalities, the support from the student body is appreciated. The decorated tables showcasing colorful cultures for others to see with traditional attire and or foods connecting with one another and creating a more inclusive school environment will transform the quad into a beautiful place for learning.
As we wait for this celebration of different nationalities and ethnic backgrounds, ASB invites everyone on campus to take part in the diversity of the school community to honor the different cultures that make up the San Marcos campus.
