As winter approaches, the San Marcos High School Writers’ Society Club is preparing for their largest and most anticipated event of the year: the Poetry Slam, which will take place during lunchtime on the last week of school before Winter Break. This cherished San Marcos tradition invites students to commemorate the power of spoken word poetry, providing a vibrant space for our school community to express themselves through original written art.
The Poetry Slam captures the true heart and spirit of our school. With students from all grade levels participating, it showcases a diverse array of voices and topics, often including poignant reflections on life, identity, and current societal issues. Last year’s Poetry Slam had an incredible turnout which we hope to see again this year, with a multitude of incredibly talented student poets each bringing their own unique artistry.
“The Poetry Slam showcases perspectives that don’t often get spotlighted,” said FrankKoroshec, English 110 and English 111 teacher, as well as club advisor for the SMHS Writers’ Society.
For many students, this event is much more than a chance to perform for an audience; it’s an opportunity to conquer stage fright and share stories and experiences through creative expression. Participants may spend weeks preparing their work, which is why it’s critical that we foster a supportive and welcoming environment in the library for each day of the competition.
“I really enjoyed participating in the Poetry Slam! Just the experience of sharing my poetry, which for me is really a piece of my soul, was something that felt unlike anything I’ve ever done. I would definitely consider entering if you enjoy writing poetry, or coming to watch and share in other people’s stories,” said former Poetry Slam participant and San Marcos senior, Keira Perkin.
This year, the Poetry Slam promises to return with many of the elements we’ve seen in past years, such as the Haiku Death Match, traditionally featured on the SMHS Royal Report, as well as including staff members and teachers who will judge the contest and have the opportunity to read their own work during the transitions between student poets.
San Marcos senior Laura Guerrero, one of the presidents of the Writers’ Society, is ecstatic about the upcoming event, explaining that, “The Poetry Slam is an important tradition as it gives students an opportunity to hone their writing skills, practice public speaking, and show fellow students the importance of creative expression. Since our English curriculum tends to focus on analytical writing, students aren’t always able to explore their creative side. That’s why the Slam is important– it allows students to create something that’s personal to them.”
Students and teachers alike are encouraged to attend the Poetry Slam and cheer on the poets. Students should consider signing up to participate themselves using the QR codes on the posters that will be hung up around school. You do not have to be an experienced writer to share your pieces, and participants from all grades are welcome!
The Poetry Slam, now having been put on for over a decade, has only grown in importance as time has passed. In an age where the value of writing as an art is often debated, it is crucial that we keep traditions such as this alive for the benefit of not only our community, but also our world. Through poetry we are able to share our stories, emotions, and, above all, connect with one another.
For more information about the Poetry Slam, or other literary competitions that we will be facilitating in the future, please reach out to the SMHS Writers’ Society or attend one of our lunchtime meetings, which are held every other Thursday in room E-6!
