A new year is the perfect time for fresh starts and setting goals, but keeping New Year’s resolutions is not always easy. By February, many of us have already given up. However, with the right strategies, this year can be different. As Sophomore Bella Hernandez puts it, “I think New Year‘s resolutions are a chance to reset and start off the year on a good note. That’s why I am locked in for school for the next semester.” Ready to stay on track? Here’s how:
Make sure your goals are realistic and specific general goals like “get fit” or “do better in school” can be overwhelming. Instead, try breaking them into smaller, more achievable steps, such as “exercise three times a week” or “spend 30 minutes daily reviewing notes.”
Start writing down your resolutions and track your progress. Put them where you see them often: on your mirror, on your lockscreen or in your planner. The constant reminder keeps your goals front and center in your mind and motivates you to stick to your plan.
Tie your goals to your daily schedule and find a partner who can hold you accountable. For instance, if your goal is to read 15 minutes a day, carve out 15 minutes before bed for a book and check in with a friend or family member from time to time. You can also ask someone to help you achieve your resolutions by accompanying you. You can play sports together and build a fun routine. Make it interesting so you can be consistent with it. Consistency builds habits.
Remember that missing a day or two does not mean failure. Just reflect on what caused the setback and adjust your approach if necessary. Time passes anyway so why don’t make it the way you want it to be. Don’t forget to celebrate victories with small rewards, like a favorite snack or a relaxing day off. Positive reinforcement helps sustain long-term habits.
This year, stick to your resolutions by focusing on progress, not perfection. With determination and these tips, you’ll turn your goals into lasting achievements! Remember, you don’t have to wait until New Year’s again to make a change in your life. Any day can be the right time to set goals and pursue your dreams. The power to grow and improve is yours, all year long!
