With the fall season finally here, Royal time is back and better than ever. But this year is different. Every Monday and Wednesday, students are given more time than ever before to meet with teachers, catch up on homework, and do fun activities. SM students and staff shared their thoughts on Royal Time and their experience so far.
First off, a student who spends their Royal Time as an academic mente, Michael Villapena, a 10th grader at San Marcos Highschool, was asked a series of questions related to Royal Time. A question that Michael was asked was, what do you do during Royal Time?`
Michael summed it up by saying, “Normally, I’ll work on my assignments and ask my academic mentors for help. I find Royal time quite useful because it helps me catch up on all my missing work.”
After that, an academic mentor, named Jonathon Sheffer, a 11th grader San Marcos Highschool, was asked a series of questions pertaining to Royal Time. One question that Jonathon was asked was, what does an academic mentor do?
“Well, the subject I chose was math, and I help kids who need help with their homework or their classwork,” said Jonathon. “Usually, I’ll help one student at a time, but there are about 15 kids in a class with about three mentors and we just go around class and help people who need help.”
Then, a Royal Time administrator, Mrs. Bagdanov was asked a few questions related to how Royal Time was going. The first question asked was, how is Royal Time going, are students using their time efficiently and effectively?
“I think Royal time is going well,” said Mrs. Bagdanov. “I am in charge of the systems of Royal time and making sure people are going where they need to go. And, what I have heard from teachers and students is that Royal Time is helping a lot of students catch up on missing work and meeting with their teachers.”
There are many great enrichment Royal Time classes, but one of the most interesting classes is Ms. Powers dance class. The first question Ms. Powers was asked was, what goes on in this class, such as general information? She explained to me that her class is a Dance Fitness class. She teaches dance based exercise class, which includes learning choreography, stretching, strength training, and so on. She also said that they mostly do hip hop combinations, and that there are 12 students in her class.
To add onto this discussion, one of Ms. Powers’s students, Maria Brennen, a 9th grader at San Marcos HighSchool, volunteered to answer a few questions associated with the class. The first question I asked was, “How do you like the dance class?”
“It’s pretty fun. Every royal time we create a new routine and we practice it,” said freshmen Maria.
Overall, Royal Time is going pretty good. It’s a great time for students to catch up on missing work and have fun.
