Isla Vista’s Field Daze Band

Are you ever bored on Friday Nights, wishing you had a new local band to listen to? If so, you are in luck!

Field Daze is a small band from Isla Vista whose music is perfect for chill evenings or fun summer nights. The band’s lead singer, Drako, described their music as “Indie rock,” with influences from “shoegaze, reggae, hardcore, and grunge.”

Adding on to this, he described it as “Music to make you mosh and cry.”

I went to one of their recent concerts at La Casa De La Raza. Immediately, you could tell that they were invested in their music. They had an outstanding presence on stage, with all of them performing with lots of dynamic energy.

Their first album, “OCEANSIDE” which was released in 2022, featured one of their more popular songs, “9-5.” The lead singer explained that much of the inspiration for writing their songs come from personal experiences, while also pulling some influence from the music that he listens to. They tend to perform some gigs around Santa Barbara, where they bring upbeat energy to the stage.

In regards to the band, SM senior Mia Ruvalcaba said, “I get a little cranky when I haven’t had my dose of Field Daze.”

When asked about the start of Field Daze, Drako explained that, while he had a passion for music and would write before the pandemic, Covid really was the time that allowed him to start getting a group together.

As for where he met each of the group members, he said, “I met our drummer through mutual friends and our OG guitar player through a musician meetup. Me and Travis, the bass player, had been friends for a little and I knew he could play so that was an easy addition.”

Looking at the future, they are planning to release a new EP (extended play) which will be followed by an album. They are also going to keep playing shows, starting with a West Coast tour coming up.

To finish off, Drako gave some advice by saying, “Start bands. There’s nothing better than young people getting together and giving it a go. You don’t have to be the best, you just gotta have something to say.”
