Alex Mack Jersey Retiring

On the night of October 13th Alex Mack’s jersey would be put into San Marcos history. His Jersey would be the first Jersey ever to be retired in San Marcos history. The night was a special night for multiple reasons, one the retirement of his Jersey and also the Royals beating Dos Pueblos, in the football game.

Alex Mack grew up in Santa Barbara California, and attended San Marcos high school. where he was named the Channel League’s Co-Most Valuable Player on defense and earned a first-team all-league selection. He was also selected to the All-CIF team. In addition to football, Mack wrestled for four years with the Royals, losing only two matches his senior year and reaching the state final. He was a CIF champion as a junior and a senior.

Alex had this to say about what his favorite memory at San Marcos was; “My favorite memory at San Marcos was being able to walk around the campus and see all of my teammates in the halls, and being able to be in classes with all my friends, and teammates was amazing. I really enjoyed the bonds and friendships I was able to build at San Marcos.”

After this he would take his talents to the University of California Berkeley. Where Mack played for the California Golden Bears football team while attending the University of California, Berkeley. He made 39 consecutive starts for the Golden Bears. He graduated in 2008 and played the 2008 season as a graduate student in education. He won the Draddy Trophy, also known as the academic Heisman, for his academic success in 2008. After the 2008 season he would declare for the NFL draft.

At the 2009 NFL draft he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the first round with the 21st pick in the draft. This would be the start to an extremely successful career for Alex Mack. In the NFL he would go on to become a 7x pro bowler, a 3x all nfl second team, nfl 2010s all decade team. Along with these awards he would play 13 total seasons in the NFL 7 with the Cleveland Browns, 5 with the Atlanta Falcons, and 1 with the San Francisco 49ers. During his extremely successful career he would also play in the 2016 Super Bowl, he is the only San Marcos royal to ever play in the Super Bowl. He would finish his extremely successful career after the 2021 season with the 49ers.

This fabulous career is well deserving of the San Marcos hall of fame, along with the NFL hall of fame. On the special night of October 13th as halftime rolled around Alex Mack would make his way to the 50 yard line area, and would be honored with his Jersey retired, as Mr. Solis would read aloud his accomplishments through this career he would receive roars and cheers, and then he would receive multiple gifts, and the wonderful honor of having his jersey retired.

Alex had this to say on what the night meant to him. “It’s really cool to be honored, and have my own jersey retired. It’s really cool to see all my family and friends out here, and see my very own number on the press box. My career and success started here and to come back to where it all started and be honored like this is a tremendous honor.”

We as a whole San Marcos community are so honored to have Alex represent the first jersey retired in school history, and are so proud of all that he has accomplished in his career on and off the field we wish him luck, as he enjoys his retirement, and we look forward to one day seeing him in the pro football hall of fame.
