The 2020-2021 PGA Tour season has come to a close, with Patrick Cantlay winning the season-long race for the FedEx Cup. This year was a year like no other, including having no fans at certain events, the longest season in PGA tour history, six Major Championships, and more incredible events. A cool statistic to look at after every season is how many first time winners there were during the season. This year had ten first time winners with notable names being Jason Kokrak, Sam Burns, and Abraham Ancer.
“My favorite moment of the season was watching all of the majors, and seeing Sam Burns win for the first time.” Said sophomore Jeffery Forster. “I was also very happy to see my favorite golfer, Cameron Smith, do well this season along with winning the Zurich classic partnered with Marc Leshiman.”
All three of these players would go on and finish in the top 30 in the Fedexcup standings, qualifying for the Tour Championship.
This year also featured six major championships due to COVID-19 postponing some of them from the previous season. The two majors in the fall were the US Open and the Masters. The Us Open was won by Bryson Dechambeau and the Masters was won by Dustin Johnson. The first Major of 2021 was the Masters, which was won by Hedki Matsuyama. Next up was the PGA Championship won by 51 year old Phil Mickelson. The 2021 US Open was won by Jon Rahm, and lastly the Open Championship was won by Collin Morikawa.
“My favorite moment of the season was Jon Rahm’s putt on 18 at the US Open to win, and Jordan spieth’s comeback season.” Said sophomore Holdt Gore.
This year’s US Open would come down to the wire between Jon Rahm and Louis Oosthuizen. On the last hole of the Championship, Jon Rahm stepped up to a 20 foot putt with more than 5 feet of break. With everybody watching holding their breath, Rahm would proceed to drain it and let out a ferocious fist pump. This was one of the best moments of the season, and of US Open history.
The comeback story of the year goes to Jordan Speith. The former world number one had plummeted all the way down to 92 in the Official World Golf Rankings and had not won since the 2017 Open Championship. This year, everything changed as he won the Valero Texas Open and finished the year making 18 straight cuts. With a total of 14 top 25s on the season, this marked a huge comeback year for Speith, something that all the fans wanted.
