Last week, the San Marcos Marquis Performing Arts Center opened its doors for this year’s spring musical, Sweeney Todd. The show opened to applause and closed with a standing ovation, a testament to the amazing performance.
Sweeney Todd features seniors Josiah Mitchell and Amber Coltrin in the main roles of the jaded Sweeney Todd and the eccentric Mrs. Lovett. The musical starts as Sweeney returns from a long journey home to London and stumbles into Mrs. Lovett’s run-down pie shop. Lovett recognizes him as the barber she used to know and helps him get situated on the second floor of her shop. Sweeney is rather skilled with a razor, known for his shaving skills, but hides a secret. He vows to get revenge on the judge who first banished him from London, ripping him from his family. Nothing will stop him til the deed is done.
Written by Stephen Sondheim, first opening on Broadway in 1979, many know Sweeney Todd to be a classic musical, a dark romp around an old and gloomy London. San Marcos theatre captures it perfectly on the stage, transporting the viewer to a world far gone. The actors on stage are marvelous in every role, having spent many hours preparing their acting and singing ability and technique. “We’re not always going to have a class that can sing (for) this show,” Ms. Saleh said on the topic of why Sweeney Todd was chosen for this year’s spring musical. The vocal roles of Sweeney Todd are difficult, and it’s rare that a year of students have the right skills. “There’s a surprising maturity to this show,” she continues, “A lot of the actors peaked at the right time in their characters.”
Sweeney Todd will be showing at the Marquis for one more weekend, starting Thursday, May 7, and closing on Saturday, May 9. Your last chance to attend the tale is coming up shortly, so make sure you don’t miss out!
