Throughout the fall, the College and Career Center hosts college visits with representatives from schools across the country to provide students with information and tips for their application. During the spring semester, they shift gears to focus on future careers and they bring in community members to teach students about career options. The Career Talks cover a wide range of occupations and usually take place during Royal Time, so they are easily accessible for any interested students. This semester, the College and Career Center has brought in speakers including Dr. Leticia Medina, a dentist, Mike Noffz, a mechanical engineer, and most recently, Lily Chubb, a photojournalist.
Chubb spoke to students about her career as a photojournalist and her work in Santa Barbara. She currently works as a freelance photographer for Noozhawk, but also occasionally photographs for the Independent and other employers. Many student athletes may already know her, as she is present at high school games throughout the year, shooting for Noozhawk. She spoke about how her love of sports is one of her favorite parts of the job because she gets to photograph athletes of many different levels in a wide range of sports. She also appreciates the connection she has gotten to the community, and being able to give people the gift of a photograph of themselves. Chubb said that she finds it meaningful to capture a moment in somebody’s life, doing something they are passionate about. While she mostly works with local teams and spends a lot of time shooting at high schools, she also works with college and professional teams. She recently photographed the US Women’s soccer team when they played at UCSB, and she has also worked with other professional teams in the past.
When asked about tips for aspiring photographers, Chubb said,
“If you don’t exactly know what you want to do, photograph everything, just get a feel for it and understand it.” She also encouraged students to take advantage of renting out cameras on campus or buying their own cameras to start experimenting with photography.
No matter what career you are interested in, the Career Talks are a great way to learn from successful members of our community. Be sure to stay updated with emails from the College and Career Center and try attending one of their career events!
