Walking onto the field with energy, confidence, and school pride. This is what makes cheerleading at San Marcos such an exciting opportunity. For students looking to get involved, cheer tryouts are more than just auditions. They are the start of a memorable journey filled with teamwork, leadership, and fun. Whether you’re new to cheer or have experience, the team is open to anyone and offers a chance to grow, challenge yourself, and become part of something bigger.
Cheerleading plays an important role in school culture, bringing students together at games, rallies, and community events. (For example, cheer got to cheer on an Alzheimer’s walk and bring spirit to those participating). Here at San Marcos, the program focuses on building spirit while helping students develop confidence and strong friendships. Our cheer team supports athletic events and represents the school with pride and dedication.
The tryout process itself is structured to help students succeed and learn the importance of determination. Tryouts typically include 3 clinic dates, where you are taught 2-3 cheers and a dance needed for the audition, along with all the cheer motions, jumps, and kicks. The final day is the audition, where you will be grouped with around 4-5 people and perform all the things you learned in front of the coaches. If you have any tumbling experience, they give you a chance to show what you know, only if you’re comfortable and know you can do it. This structure allows students to prepare, improve, and feel more confident before being evaluated.
One of the best parts of cheer is the positive environment it creates. Students don’t join just to perform; they become part of a supportive team that values hard work, positive attitude, and encouragement. Cheer emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and school spirit, helping students grow both on and off the field.
Overall, trying out for cheer at SMHS can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Students gain confidence, make new friends, and become leaders in their school community. If you’re interested, the next step is simple: check the school’s athletics page for updated tryout dates and start preparing your skills. With dedication and enthusiasm, you could soon be part of a team that brings energy and pride to every event.
