2021 Fashion Predictions

With our new year, new styles, looks, and brands, it can be hard to tell precisely where the trends are coming from and what to expect. With COVID-19 still keeping us mostly at home, it has changed fashion as we know it already, making it almost harder to pinpoint the most popular trends.

This Spring 2021, the recent runway was filled with pinks, with hues like bubblegum and pastel pink, as well as more saturated colors and neon colors. Many stylists predict earthy shades, such as rust red, mustard yellow, denim blue, ink, and deep browns, will trend later into this year. Our most recent Vogue Magazine also explains that we can expect many florals and stripes this spring too. We should keep an extra eye out on fashion designers Stella McCartney, Simone Rocha Francesco Risso, Eckhuas Latta, and Christopher John Rogers.

One sophomore I spoke to stated, “Many other people and I get fashion inspiration from are social media—for example, Pinterest, Tik Tok, Instagram, and more. Social media makes it really easy to share new trends, and I know I take lots of inspiration from there!”

Lately, we have seen countless male influencers have begun to wear high-waisted pants. Plus, the style filled the Paris Male Runway this year. Stylists across the world predict high-waisted pants will trend this year in men’s fashion. Many designers such as Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Lou Dalton, Craig Green, Balenciaga, and Duckie Brown all have their own looks with these pants out.

Another trend continuing this year we predict the statement selves. They can be ballooned, or patterned, long sleeve, or short sleeve. It’s really up to what you want to wear, which is what I love about it. Many large brands have recently gotten more and more products of all these different sleeve shirts, and we can most definitely see more out on the streets this year.

Chunkier soles and heels will continue to trend in 2021:

One trend that had skyrocketed this past year was chunky-soled shoes. Whether it was heels or sneakers, they were definitely one of the largest trends that many could take part in. Many students’ favorite brands have all converted their looks this year with chunkier footwear, which will continue this year.

Broader and looser cuts:

Comfier, and totally in trend, many students believe it will also dominate the runway.

A junior here at San Marcos even stated, “I think because of COVID-19u and more staying at home, loungewear is a super realistic fashion prediction for 2021! People want to be comfy at home doing things like online classes, but they still might want to look presentable if they need to have their video on or something like that.”

Lighter than a jacket but thicker than a shirt, making them the perfect layering piece through fall, winter, and spring. Their popular wool blend and leather styles make them denser than your average shirt but thinner than your heavy winter coat, so you can easily layer them over a turtleneck and under an overcoat throughout the colder temperatures. When spring arrives, you can throw it on over a lightweight tee with little effort required.

Many of us remember back in the early 2000s that velour tracksuits were popular. As the trend Y2K continues this year, many stylists predict that it will have an enormous comeback. Y2K is the shortened version of “the year 2000”.

To this many students also agreed, even one staying, “One older trend that definitely made a come back in 2020 was people revisited many fashion trends from the early 2000s, so I think that will totally continue into 2021 because a lot of those styles were super versatile.”

Lastly, fashion is everywhere, and only the future can tell us exactly what are going to be the trends of this year. So let the people around you inspire you, and make your closet a way to represent yourself! Have fun and happy 2021!
