Coming up on Saturday night, January 20, San Marcos is having their Winter Formal at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, following a theme of Snow Ball. This dance was organized by Sophomore ASB members, Izzy Ratliffe, Rover Ojendis, Loki Dunbar, and Hadley Schmidt. Since this is the first winter formal that the school has had in almost a decade, many students have questioned the details of the dance. If this includes you, this article can tell you what to expect!
The dance is taking place at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, which is an open venue, which is a monumental building of Santa Barbara. Outdoors, it has a courtyard surrounded by awnings. However, with the curveball of unexpected weather, the Sophomore ASB explained that they had to work around it, adapting the venue to the rain.
Izzy Ratliffe, the Sophomore Treasurer, said, “We’ve put a lot of work into it and we’ve had to be resilient through the rain.”
The most major change has been covering the venue in a tent with lighting, which will cover the dancefloor. Since the historical museum has awnings, they are planning to have some photo booths hidden from the rain under those. An aspect of the dance that will differ from Homecoming is that there will not be any food, as they will only be serving water, so make sure to have some food beforehand.
As for checking in, they explained that, similarly to Hoco, everyone has to bring their student ID in order to check in, as they will make sure that you bought your tickets. There will also be an optional coat check for anyone that does not want to carry around their purses or other items. Music-wise, there will be a DJ, though they will not be taking any suggestions for songs.
Overall, the ASB has made many efforts to make this dance happen, especially with the obstacles thrown in their way. For those attending, make sure to bring a coat, and for the others, tickets are limited but still available if you would like to go!
