On October 15th, the San Marcos Choir performed their fall concert, Breaking Barriers. The show featured songs that have broken records or redefined genres. The fall concert is held annually at San Marcos in the MPAC and is the first show of every year, featuring pieces from all of the choirs we have on campus. This year, the show featured musical theater pieces from shows such as Les Misérables and Rent, as well as some classic hits, such as “Hey Jude” by The Beatles.
When asked about the show, vice president of Madrigals Sydney Wood said, “It was a fun concert and different than usual; there was a lot of musical theater and we usually do more classical choral music. A lot of people had solos and we performed really well!”
There are five San Marcos choirs with varying levels of rigor and commitment. For those who are interested in choir but do not have much experience, Girls Chorus and Royal Knights are both great options. Girls Chorus is made up of mostly underclassmen girls, and is a great stepping stone to more competitive choirs. The class is held during the first semester of the school year. The Royal Knights is the boys chorus, but they also accept low altos. They meet throughout the year during Royal Time, so it isn’t as big of a commitment as taking a full class. Enchante is the more advanced girls choir, held during second semester. A Cappella is an intermediate/advanced mixed choir, and the class is held in the fall. Finally, Madrigals are the most advanced choir on campus and take the class year round. They perform throughout the year at SoHo and Christmas caroling in addition to San Marcos shows and are leaders of the vocal music program.
Sophomore Connor Anderson, member of A Capella and Royal Knights said, “Choir has been great this year and I like that we were able to perform some pop and rock songs at this show. We all had a great time performing as a group and can’t wait for our winter concert.”
It is no secret that the vocal music program is one of the strongest parts of San Marcos, and this choir show was proof of that. Be sure to come to the Winter Concert, which will be on December 16th at the San Roque Church.
